Minister States MoD Examining Security Risk from Vehicles from China, as Staff Told to Refrain from Secret Talk in Cars.

A defence minister has stated that the MoD is currently investigating the possible threats posed by Chinese-made cars, while staff have been advised to avoid talking about secret information in any vehicles.

Safety Guidance for MoD Personnel

During a recent appearance on a radio station, a defence minister addressed claims that MoD officials have been instructed not to talk about classified material while travelling in Chinese vehicles.

The minister stated that the ministry is “examining” cars from China within its fleets, however emphasised that security is a concern in all contemporary cars.

Our department has a fleet of thousands of vehicles in the Ministry of Defence and those vehicles account for a very small number.
But whether you’re traveling in a vehicle from China or a car from another country, our instruction to our people is to avoid connecting MoD technology into their vehicle, not to have discussions at a classified classification in any vehicle, because of the growing threats of eavesdropping that are present in all vehicle, to restrict those confidential talks in secure locations. That’s a wise and sensible thing for anyone concerned about safety.

After it was put to him that it would be prudent for the ministry to cease using all Chinese vehicles, Pollard replied: That is precisely what we are looking into at the present time.”

Wider Defence Context

This announcement follows claims from Scandinavian countries have warned the UK to the presence of multi-purpose kill switches in Chinese buses, which could allow China to disable buses and cause chaos to transport systems.

Additionally, a Russia intelligence vessel was reportedly directing laser beams at Royal Air Force pilots, labeled a “extremely risky” action by government representatives.

This broader defence situation underscores the importance of robust measures and caution in all areas of official operations, from vehicle usage to discussions habits.
