Australia's captain Expected to Feature a Major Role in Iconic Rivalry

Pat Cummins bowling

The pace bowler has claimed over 300 dismissals in 71 appearances with an impressive average.

The Australian selection chief George Bailey has stated that pace spearhead Cummins will play a "major part" in the upcoming historic rivalry.

Speculation had been growing that the 32-year-old might miss the series due to a stress fracture in his back that was still troubling him.

Initial reports from team management suggested no final decision had been made regarding whether he would play, with the extended contest set to start on 21 November in Perth.

Bailey expressed that the captain is progressing and remained hopeful about his chances of being involved.

"It's clear that the window is narrowing and various factors involved, not only the physical problem, but other factors as well," the selector added.

"It's positive. We firmly believe that he will feature a major part. With luck from the opening match. Otherwise, we'll adjust."

Injury History

Cummins was ruled out the white-ball matches against New Zealand and India last month after medical tests showed a stress reaction in his back.

There is a track record of spinal problems, with flare-ups in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 causing him to miss several home seasons in a limited period.

He emphasized he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his rehabilitation process to secure his spot for the series.

He mentioned that he did not know if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his comeback but admitted it was "becoming urgent" for him to be fit for the opener.

Alternative Arrangements

Should Cummins not be fit, veteran batsman Smith will take over the captaincy.

Versatile player Green was excluded lately from Australia's squad for their one-day international series against the subcontinent side as a safety move because of soreness in his side.

The selector characterized it as a "minor" injury and confirmed that he'll feature in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "ideally positioned to be ready to bowl."

"We put so much time has gone into creating the schedule for him to be available for the opening match as an batting and bowling option," the selector detailed.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the first two ODIs anyway. His aggressive style the willow in shorter formats, should it hinder progress for 24 more hours, we just made the decision to take a cautious route."
